[HLMainPic] Chesterton was "Formerly of the Field Train Department of the Royal Artillery, Subsequently a Captain in the Army of Columbia, & at Present [i.e. the time of writing his memoirs] Governor of the House of Correction at Cold Bath Fields." He was privately educated & with the influence of Viscountess Perceval, a relative of the then Prime Minister, was appointed to the Field Train Department of the Ordnance in Feb. 1812, embarking for Cadiz in June; served in Spain attached to Dillon's regiment; in 1814 sailed with a force for America via Bermuda & was engaged in the Battle of New Orleans (1815) & oither engagements in the "War of 1812"; then, after some time with the Army of Occupation in France & Flanders at the end of the Waterloo campaign joined the British Legion in Columbia, a mercenary force in support of Bolivar, & returned to England in 1820 where he joined the prison service, became a friend of Charles Dickens & Elizabeth Fry & a campaigner for prison reform. Valuable account of the war of 1812, the activities of Bolivar, & 19th Century prison reform in England.
