Stroud served with 1/4th Hampshires in 128th (Hampshire) Bde., 46th Div. The Brigade landed in Tunisia in Jan. 1943 & was very quickly in action, inc. several battles which resulted in large numbers of casualties & prisoners taken. He was most probably taken PoW at the Battle of Sidi Nisr 26/2/43 or of Hunts Gap, 27-28/2/43, when the Brigade lost heavily. Archive consists of nine letters (official Italian forms for PoWs' use, rather like modern day air letters) written between 22/3/43-22/7/43 & nine similar from German camp (Stalag IVD), 11/11/43-25/12/44, plus nine Kriegsgefangenpost cards from Germany 1944-45 & several dozen post-war reuinion menus &c. of Hampshire Regt. OCA, Aldershot Branch & sundry related ephemera. Some extracts from letters: 22/3/43: "I have been waiting so long for this, I hardly know how to begin... I hope you weren't too worried when you heard I was missing. I can't say much about it, but I think we put up a good show before we were captured. Most of our Coy. are here... so we have quite a happy family. At present we are only at a Transit camp... I shall have to do some scrounging now as I was captured in just what I stood up in. I believe you are allowed to send me a parcel every 3 months [lists items required: shirts, razor blades, &c.)." 2/7/43: "Last Saturday was a red letter day for us, the Italians allowed 20 of us to go out for a walk of about 8 miles. It was marvellous after being in here for 3 months. Of course we were accompanied by an officer, 6 sentruies & a Carabinieri, but they were very decent & took us to a nice village..." 11/11/43 [Germany]: "Since I last wrote we have moved to a working camp. It is quite good here, there are only 100 of us here & we are working in a factory helping to make baths! You know how much I always wanted to have some blue overalls, well I've been issued with some now, I look a proper workman. The department I work in has about 5 girls in it, they're quite nice." 25/12/44: "We finished work on Saturday evening & start again tomorrow but to make up we also get New Years Day off. We have had a good time today especially as Red Cross parcels after an absence of some weeks arrived two days ago. With those & a few bottles of beer, plus everyone's good humour everything has gone well. As it is almost two years since I last saw you you can guess my thoughts... I am sure it will not be very long before all this is behind us & we can then look forward to those happy days that are to come..." See illustrations on our website.   £225
