[HLMainPic] The Hon. Roland Erasmus Philipps, son of the 1st Viscount St. Davids (and brother of Colwyn Erasmus Philipps), was born in 1890, Ed. at Winchester & New College, Oxford. He took a very great interest in the Boy Scout movement, becoming Commissioner for East and North East London. He was gazetted to the 9th Bn. Royal Fusiliers in 1914, was wounded & awarded the MC in the spring of 1916 and KiA at Ovillers on 7th July 1916. He is buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension. An account of his life and interests with several extracts from letters from the front, also a 'brief historical sketch of development to 1933' of Roland House in Stepney, a Georgian property that Phillips bought in 1914 and bequeathed to the Scouts.
