The author was a captain with divisional signals in the Middle East & Burma & was later a prominent military historian. His history contains a very fine record of the Division's exploits in all the theatres where it served. Rare deluxe edition, bound in full red morocco, raised bands & black leather lettering labels to sp., plus the Division's black & red "Ball of Fire" (or as their rival formations had it - the Flaming Areshole) sign inset to front. Shoulders of sp. a little rubbed but generally a very nice example of this superior edition, with marbled endpapers, gilt edges &c. See illustration on our website.   £145

Excellent detailed narrative of the long slog from Maungdaw southwards & the amphibious 'hooks' of the final stages including the epic battle of Kangaw. Roll of awards. In his Foreword the GOC explains how production difficulties were imaginatively overcome: "...the problem of the production of this narrative has been solved in a remarkable fashion. By the courtesy & with the keen practical help of Major J.W. Snelling, Governor of Taiping Gaol, the whole of the printing has been carried out by members of the Kempei Tai (Japanese military police) rounded up by the Division & now in Major Snelling's safe custody." Original printed card wraps. with printed title & the Division's "Ace of Spades" emblem to front, complete with end-pocket retaining all of the original folded maps. VG & very rare. [HLMainPic] The 1942 retreat in Burma, 1st Arakan ops., 1st Chindit mission &c. Orig. cloth, VG with armorial bookplate of Bernard Edward Fergusson, plus his loosely inserted review of this book for 'The Scotsman' dated 7th Nov. 1958. His review is interestingly critical: Fergusson believed that this volume "skated over" (or even suppressed) various matters of contention. Note: Bernard Fergusson, 1911-1980, was commissioned in the Black Watch in 1931. In October 1943 he was promoted to acting brigadier & given command of the 16th Infantry Brigade, which was converted into a Chindit formation for operations in the deep jungles of Burma miles behind Japanese lines. He commanded this brigade throughout the Chindit operations of 1944 before becoming Director of Combined Operations from 1945-46. He retired from military service in 1958. He was Governor-General of New Zealand, 1962-67, & raised to the peerage as Lord Ballantrae. Interesting copy previously owned by a distinguished Chindit brigade commander.
