[HLMainPic] War letters between Jan. 1918 (leaving New York Harbor) & Jan. 1919 at Colmar of Clarence Van Schaick Mitchell, Captain, US Cavalry, who had volunteered & served in France as a volunteer ambulance driver in 1914 before returning to to complete his law degree at Harvard in 1917. He was commissioned in August 1917 & "owing doubtless to his proficiency in French" was assigned a Liaison Officer on the staff of General de Castelanau. These letters, which were printed for circulation among family & friends, contain most interesting observations on De Castelnau & other French officers with whom he worked, his own role in events & the course of the war in 1918.
