Preface by Col. A.H.W. Haywood, formerly commanding 76th Brigade RGA states: "Captain Hare... commanded 228th Siege Battery from the time of its birth to the date of disbandment in 1919... The most important battles in which the unit was engaged were Vimy Ridge, Messines, Third Battle of Ypres, The Retreat of the Fifth Army in the Spring of 1918, & the triumphal Advance of the Fourth Army in the Autumn of the same year... Captain Hare's graphic description of the horrors of battle, lightened here & there with amusing anecdotes, will recall to many of you episodes, which were both eventful & humorous, of those bygone days when you were comrades in the Great World War." The battery was raised at Edinburgh in August 1916 & crossed to France in Jan. 1917. Includes roll of officers who served in the battery, list of awards, number of rounds fired & other statistics & notes, also a roll of NCOs on strength at 11/11/1918.
