PRIVATE No. 940 [Pseud. of STURGES (Robert Simon Mansfield)] "On the Remainder of Our Front." 1st Ed., 156pp. Harrison & Sons. 1917  #64460
[HLMainPic] Personal account of service in the 19th (PS) Bn. Royal Fusiliers, proceeding overseas in Nov. 1915, experiences on the Festubert & Cambrin fronts until posted home for a commission in Feb. 1916 (Sturges was commissioned in the MGC & later served at the War Office). An informative, unvarnished but atmospheric account of the battalion's experience of active service (at the time Sturges left it was pulled from the line & used as a potential officer pool before disbanding shortly after). Harrison & Son., favoured printer of the War Office, were not known for general book publishing & it is possible that this work was printed for the author. It is certainly rare. From the library of Henry Williamson, not signed but bears the pencil signature "D.H. Bell" to ffep & presumably passed to HW by Douglas Bell. One small marginal note by HW identifying the recipient of a letter from Sturges - Col. Wolrige Gordon - who commanded the 19th Royal Fusiliers. Very nice copy in orig. maroon cloth, titled in black, in sl. chipped but scarce dw. See illustrations on our website.   £225
