[HLMainPic] Naval career inc. service in Burma 1851-53 (second Burma War; commanding paddle boats on the Irrawaddy, fighting at Pegu &c., wounded). After service in the Baltic 1854-55 became much involved in surveys of the West African coast, settlement of Lagos, expeditions into the interior, &c., & became more of a colonial administrator than naval officer. In Ashanti war 1873-74 he organised & commanded a Hausa force which took part in the relief of Kumasi &c. According to the author's Preface "There was a strong feeling at the Colonial Office... that he should write a history of his share in the Ashanti campaign of 1874... He proceeded to collect his papers & despatches with the view of writing the book... & had finished writing the introductory chapter" when apparently a new appointment (Governor of Newfoundland) & pressure of work thereafter precluded completion. His wife completed his work with the assistance of Sir Richard Temple & several senior military officers who had been involved in Ashanti &c. Orig. maroon cloth, gilt, VG but for some sl. marking to boards, & rare. See illustration on our website.   £100
