COKE (Richard [Arthur Sacheverell, MC]) Youth Before the Flood. 1st Ed. (second issue binding), 319pp. VG in very sl. chipped dw. John Long. nd  #55492
[HLMainPic] The author was the subject of an intriguing article by Ken Marsh published in Medal News in 2013. He enlisted in the Cheshire Regt. in 1914, commissioned in 20th Bn. Lancashire Fusliers (Salford Pals) 1915 & was awarded the MC on the Somme. He was also severely wounded & invalided home. Graded as medically unfit for active service he seems to have suffered anxiety (as it would now be termed) or depression, absented himself from the training bn. to which he was attached & enlisted in the Army Service Corps, went to France again & was wounded in Oct. 1918, also receiving the MSM. He later became the Middle-East correspondent for the Manchester Guardian. His autobiographical war novel missed the boom in Great War literature & evidently did not sell as the copy here offered is in a cheaper binding, titled in black, with the 1st Edition dw present (price 7/-6d) with part of wraparound band offering this issue at 3/6d (with endorsements from the Manchester Evening News: "Impressive human & sound," & the Liverpool Echo: "A promising first novel.") The writing is in places very fine, e.g. description of Trones Wood: "Charred tree stumps... looking like the ghosts of trees in some demented forest... A damp unpleasant smell obtruded itself. Sweet, nauseating, clinging as the dust along the road. The smell of burnt powder, tear gas and dead men lying in hundreds..." Rare survival, especially so in attractive dw. See illustration on our website.   £165
