[HLMainPic] Blake graduated from West Point in 1880, joined 6th US Cavalry, served in the Apache Wars in command of Apache Indian Scouts: "with them I roamed about the mountains till 1885" when after passing through the Infantry & Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth he was posted to New Mexico. Finding life there tedious he resigned in 1889 & ended up gold prospecting in South Africa. Vehemently anti-British, he took up the Boer cause in 1899 & commanded the Irish Brigade of "the Irish & the Irish-Americans of Johannesburg & Pretoria, about 300 strong" throughout the campaign.
