CARDIGAN (Lord)] Eight Months on Active Service; or, A Diary of A General Officer of Cavalry in 1854. 1st Ed., 122pp. Printed by Wm. Clowes & Sons. nd [1855].  #66232
[HLMainPic] The exceptionally rare Crimean memoirs of the colourful & controversial leader of the Light Cavalry Brigade - who despite any faults of character gallantly rode at the head of his Brigade into the mouth of the Russian guns at Balaclava. The narrative contains an account of his appointment to this command (including transcripts of official letters of appointment &c.), his diary of the campaign (including his account of the famous charge), various extracts from letters & documents. Beautifully printed by Clowes & Sons, most probably for private circulation by the author as the title page states 'Printed by' rather than just published; the rarity of the work supporting this contention. Orig. maroon cloth boards, blindstamped & gilt, recently & professionally recased with matching blind sp. panel, eps also renewed, VG thus & one of the rarest Crimean memoirs. Pencil note to tp: "Major General Earl of Cardigan." See illustrations on our website.   £1250
