[HLMainPic] This post-Boer War Royal Commission was established to enquire into the organization, numbers & terms of service of the Militia & Volunteer Forces, & so to report on their military efficiency. The principal requirement was to establish whether the Militia & Volunteers were the most suitable method for defending the UK, as an adjunct to the Regular Army. During the course of deliberations over 82 sittings & the examination of 134 witnesses (which included FM Lord Roberts, Sir John Ardagh, Sir John French, many commanding officers of volunteer units, members of the mercantile community, Maj.-Gen. Sir Alfred Turner (Inspector-General of Auxiliary Forces) the overriding conclusion was that the volunteer force was not fit for purpose, although disclipine in units, & the services performed by various individuals & contingents during recent operations in South Africa was creditable. $ Vols. in very clean orig. blue printed wraps, bound together in contemp. ledger binding.
