Falls states: "The account of an attack at Passchendaele & of conditions at Cambrai after the great German counter-attack are very good indeed; in fact, among the best of their kind. But the rest is disfigured by an unreasoned & unpleasant vituperation of superiors & all troops other than those of the front line..." This copy with a number of extra illustrations, postcards & repro. photos. of Western Front scenes, plus loosely inserted typed letter (signed in ink) from the author in 1953 thanking the recipient for the "copy of my indiscretion" [i.e. this book] "which we have been vainly seeking for years..."
