HOCKING (No. 678 Pte. L.H., RAMC) Diary, France, February-July 1916. [ii]+238pp., A4 format bound in recent blue cloth. (c.1980s)  #67884
[HLMainPic] Photocopy of an older typed copy of the diary of Pte. Leslie Harold Hocking, who belonged to "B" Section, 2/1st City of London Field Ambulance, from embarkation to his final diary entry on 29th June 1916, being a detailed, eloquent account of the experiences of a keen & talented observer of events. Includes, inter al, details of unglamorous sanitary work, as well as work as a stretcher bearer in the trenches, &c. Hocking was Killed in Action on 1st July 1916, aged 19, & is buried in Hebuterne Military Cemetery. The diary is followed by reports of such details as could be gathered about the circumstances of his death, together with letters of condolence from officers of his unit & pals, & his obituary in 'The Olavian' (the organ of his alma mater, St. Olave's School).
