5th Gurkha Rifles officer on home leave in 1914: appointed to raise & command 9th (S) Bn. Rifle Brigade & led it until end of 1915 including actions at Ypres (inc. Hooge 30/7/15) & Loos. Valuable account of this New Army unit enlivened by V-S's candid views on his contemporaries & his undentably high opinion of himself.
