Rare memorial volume: posthumously published letters, with a short biographical introduction by his wife, of novelist commissioned in 5th (SR) Bn. Rifle Brigade, attd. 3rd Bn. in France 1915-16; wounded on the Somme; then with 12th (Service) Bn. 1917 & Died of Wounds post-Arras, 9/4/17. As a civilian in uniform he provides an interesting comparison between the regulars & his later experiences with a service bn., "They havn't nearly as good an idea of making themselves comfortable, feed & live like pigs, & don't get any work out of the servants. Same with the NCOs I should fancy, but that remains to be seen." Orig. blue cloth, gilt, rather worn but sound, lacking frontis. portrait but with presentation inscrip. from C.H. Vernede: his wife & the compiler of this volume. See illustration on our website.
