George William Taylor was born in 1892, Ed. at Eton ("as far as his education was concerned his time at Eton was largely wasted. His talent was mathematical, his taste was for natural science, but he was forced through the usual dry classical study, which tended to dwarf rather than to develop his faculties... but he always acquitted himself with credit...") & Trinity College, Cambridge. Taylor was reading for the Bar when war came & on 15/8/14 he was commissioned in the RFA. He served at Gallipoli then with the 10th (Irish) Div. in Salonika until invalided with sickness. While recuperating in London he was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1916. In April 1917 he was posted to France & there wounded on 5/6/17 during preparations for the Battle of Messines, returning again to England for treatment. He sailed for France for the last time on 17/8/17 & Died of wounds (gas poisoning incurred on the night of 1st/2nd Nov.) on 9/11/17 whilst serving with "A" Batt., 150th Army Bde. RFA. Contains an account he wrote of his experiences in Serbia, his letters from France, extracts from letters from his CO describing the manner of his passing & (in the introduction-cum-memoir by his Grandfather) other extracts relating to his good conduct at Messines &c., for which he had been recommended for the MC (which he never received & for which his Grandfather lobbied in vain after his death). Orig. red cloth, titled in black to sp., VG in somewhat worn but entirely sound dw featuring a photo. portrait of the subject to the front panel. Rare in dw. See illustrations on our website.
