Montague, journalist & author, served overseas in the ranks & as an Intelligence officer. Falls described him as "the ablest & most attractive writer of the 'disenchanted' school of British writers on the war" & of this novel: "...The girl's fiance goes to the War, deserts, & is shot. This part is Mr Montague's most passionate & powerful vein, but the whole thing is a piece of special pleading." Montague sold in large numbers in his day but is now barely remembered. Orig. red cloth, somewhat worn, about VG in chipped, worn & stained but quite striking dw designed by P. Youngman Carter. See illustrations on our website.
