American born, of French extraction, the author travelled to Paris in 1914 & enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. On account of previous service he was quickly promoted to sergeant. He then received the Croix de Guerre during fighting in 1915 which culminated in wounds in the Champaigne region in September. He seems to have inspired ire as in March 1916 the New York Times reported: "American members of the Foreign Legion are protesting against the prominence given by some American publications to Edward Morlae, a former member of the corps. The final straw has been the arrival in Paris of the current Atlantic Monthly, containing a story by Morlae, entitled "A Soldier of the Legion," in which he gives what they assert is a garbled account of the fighting in which the Legion took part."
