Hugely successful war novel which went to eleven or more impressions, of which the sleeve notes state: "The most striking piece of War literature that has yet appeared! In plain, downright language the adventures of an infantryman are related, from the early days of training in England, through the mud of the trenches, amid danger with comrades whose unspeakable gallantry & sense of humour made victory possible." Orig. red cloth, titled in black, minor wear to cloth o/w VG in rare & attractive pictorial dw plus loosely inserted prospectus for the book, reproducing the front panel of the dw, with 2pp. of specimen text.
