CALLINGHAM (Clement Scott) Diary & Letters of Clement Scott Callingham, 1914-1918. 1st Ed., [v]+92pp., portrait frontis., 3 photos. Printed (presumably privately) by Cockayne & Co., Ltd. nd (c.1927)  #67021
[HLMainPic] Clement Scott Callingham MC served with 1st Bn. HAC from August 1914 to October 1915; commissioned RFA. This work consists of the folloeing sections: Diary from embarkation at Southampton on 18th Sept. 1914 to join the HAC in France until 27th July 1915; Letters from Date of Enlistment, August 1914 till Return to England Wounded (Gassed) September 1917 (with HAC until Sept. 1915, then to UK for officer training, commissioned RFA, returned to France with D/308th Bde. RFA May 1916 & there until gassed on 11th Sept. 1917. The period spent with No. 14 Section, "D" Copy., 1st HAC in the line 1914-15 is of great interest including daily diary entries & lengthy & informative letters home (photos. include the men of this section, named, in the line at St. Eloi in May 1915). The period of commissioned service is briefer but still contains interesting letters describing work at OPs, &c., with some interesting observations such as: "Have you ever seen these steel shrapnel helmets we wear? they are the most uncomfortable things imaginable, very heavy & frightfully hot, but I suppose they are very good things." Orig. brown cloth, gilt to front, inscribed by author, plus stamps & label of The Bible College of Wales Library (presented by Mrs Callingham in 1938, & doubtless well received). VG thus & rare. See illustrations on our website.   £225
