The story of the 1895 campaign for the Relief of Chitral in letterpress, reproducing Despatches of Gen. Low (commanding Chitral Relief Force), Capt. Townshend & Col Kelly (32nd Pioneers, commanding Gilgit Force), including Orders of Battle, statements of casualties & recommendations for awards, followed by the 127 finely produced plates from photos. taken by Sgt.-Major Develin, RE, Bombay Sappers & Miners, who accompanied the 3rd Brigade as Photographer. These exceptionally fine plates include views of all the geographical features traversed by the 3rd Brigade, including the Malakand Pass, Swat Valley, Lowari Pass, Ashreth Valley, Chitral River, Valley & Fort &c. (many showing troops on the march &c.), also regimental & staff groups, encampments, bridges, graves & other subjects. A very fine & rare compilation. Orig. red cloth, blindstamped boards, gilt title to front, 2-inch split to sp., one small blemish to front, minor rubbing & sl. fading to cloth, but a very nice copy & very rare with ink inscrip. to tp: "H.S. Davey from W.G. 26.9.96" (the recipient was Captain, later Lt.-Col., CMG, Hon. Horace Scott Davey of the 18th Hussars & the giver presumably General Gatacre.) See illustrations on our website.
