Douglas was serving with "A" Coy., 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, holding trenches (dismounted) around Observatory Ridge & Armagh Wood, south of the Menin Road when captured on 2nd June 1916 during a German attack at Sanctuary Wood when the front line trenches were lost. He was at Lazarett VI at Cologne, &c., had one arm removed & was repatriated to Canada via Swirzerland in 1917.
