[HLMainPic] Excellent & rare complete set (many volumes are very rare & the final two, 1918 Parts IV & V, published after WW2 when interest had moved away from the Western Front of 1914-1918, are exceptionally difficult to obtain). Cornerstone work covering all phases in detail & an essential core of research for any serious understanding of the conduct & course of Western Front operations. David French's invaluable discourse (contained in 'The First World War & British Military History') on the circumstances & methods of its compilation, pointing out its strengths & defects, is an useful companion. Nice set of original editions in original cloth bindings, all VG & not ex-lib., except one volume 1917 III (Cambrai) which is ex-Library of the British Embassy at Washington; 1918 Part II Text stained o/w all volumes generally VG, many with the armorial bookplate of Col. Sir Leonard Ropner, MC, TD, BA, DL, JP, MP. Note: Ropner (1895-1977) commanded an artillery battery in France for two years. He was Member of Parliament for several northern constituencies between 1923-1964. Among numerous public offices he was Personal Private Secretary to the Secretary of War, 1924-28.
