France 1914 i/c 2nd Sherwood Foresters, spending the winter on the La Bassée front, then commanding 87th Bde., 29th Div., at Gallipoli 1915, GOC 27th Div. in Salonika & GOC III Indian Army Corps in Mesopotamia from Nov. 1916 & succeeded to command of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the death of Maude a year later.
