[HLMainPic] Geoffrey Arthur Prideaux was born in 1891, educated at Eton and Sandhurst and commissioned in the Somerset Light Infantry in March 1911. Served continuously with the 1st Battalion (11th Brigade, 4th Division) in France and Flanders from August 1914-August 1915 (apart from a spell in hospital, December 1914-March 1915), as Battalion Transport Officer, Company Commander and thereafter as Staff Captain then Brigade Major of the 11th Infantry Brigade, until killed in action by shellfire on 19th January 1917 whilst making a reconnaissance from the forward trenches. He was twenty-five and is buried in Hem Farm Military Cemetery. The volume includes his detailed and interesting daily diary from August 1914-14th January 1917 containing much interesting and in-depth detail on the services of the 1st S.L.I. and other units of the 11th Brigade – including on the first day of the Battle of the Somme – followed by several letters of condolence.
