Large format collection of Stoops' evocative wartime drawings, each with letterpress caption: "This series of sketches first published in The American Legion Weekly is preserved in permanent form for the American Legion Posts by the Jell-O Company, Inc., Le Roy, New York." A foreword explains that "These pages show... fragments of the soldiers' daily life; but, as they were published first as advertisements for Jell-O, scenes of the 'Chow' line predominate. Food was really a predominating thought..." Herbert Morten Stoops (1888-1948) was a Utah born commercial artist/illustrator who qualified at Utah State College & served in the war with a commission in the 6th Field Artillery. Inter al. he designed covers for popular illustrated magazines. He died in NY aged 61 & was was said that "His loose and vigorous Impressionist style of painting had a marked influence on many younger pulp artists, such as Charles DeFeo, A. L. Ross and H. W. Scott." Orig. paper covd. boards with cloth backstrip, paper label to front. Externally somewhat worn, little tears at head of sp., generally sound, finely printed on laid paper, internally fine with no staining or marking. Scarce. See illustrations on our website.
