PLATTS (Jessie) The Witness. 1st Ed., 288pp., 2 portraits. VG in dw. Hutchinson & Co. nd (c.1924)  #68216
[HLMainPic] Jessie Platts lost two sons in action: Capt. John Carrick Platts, attd. 10th Lancers, Indian Army, who was KiA in a cavalry charge in Iraq in 1920 & Lieut. Edgar Lovell Filmer Platts, RMLI, who was wounded in 1916 at Beaumont Hamel & KiA near Gavrelle on 28th April 1917 when still under 18 years of age. This is explained in a short biographical Foreword, but the vast majority of the work consists of "a series of messages" in which Edgar "describes after-death conditions & life in the spirit world." The messages were recorded on paper through the medium of their mother's hand during 1918, after which the spirit perhaps ran out of imaginative new things to say. A triumph of belief of which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said: "The best I have read, and I have read a good many." Orig. blue cloth, gilt, VG in chipped/rubbed dw, little damage to inner front joint, still nice copy. See illustrations on our website.   £65
