In this capacity he served in the Yser sector in Belgium, then, in October 1915, enlisted in the 29th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He went to an Officer Cadet Battalion in July 1916 and was commissioned in the Liverpool Regiment in October; wounded in France on 20th May 1917 with the 4th Battalion after several engagements. He transferred to the American Army in February 1918 and served with the American Expeditionary Force in France.
