James Wood Colin Taylor was educated at Rugby and "Having no special aptitude for study" he entered into a business career in London. He was, however, a keen Bible scholar, also a gymnast. He joined the Honourable Artillery Company in 1914, then obtained a commission in the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He proceeded to France in June and was killed in action at Hooge, while attached to the 2nd Battalion, on 9th August 1915. He was twenty-eight years old and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. Includes letters from France with considerable allusion to God's work but also some details of his experiences and conditions at the Front. When he joined his battalion on 24th June 1915 he went straight into the trenches: "…in a torrent of rain, loaded with pack etc. The roads were awful, and so was the odour in certain spots… German flares were going up often… I am in a good dug-out and my servant, A., is in a smaller one quite near. I hope I shall soon get used to the banging, cracking, and swishing of different things. The mud is fairly bad, but far better than it must have been in the winter. I shall be glad of a sleep tomorrow. Washing will be a difficulty…" Also contains extracts from letters of condolence etc. including one from the aforementioned servant, Pte. F. Allis: "He was badly wounded in the head first, but he would not go out of action. He stayed with his men, and shortly after a shell knocked in part of the trench where he was standing, and that was the end… I don't want to be a servant again. I know I shall not get an officer like Mr. Taylor."Orig. green cloth, gilt, VG.
