Artillery, infantry & MI detachments in South Africa, with a detailed roll of service. Orig. black cloth, gilt, VG with ink inscrip. "Edward Edwards. Aug. 1903" plus tipped-in letter (with envelope present) from C.E.D. Budworth [Captain & Adjt. of Battery in South Africa & frequently mentioned in the text] "Thank you for your letter and information etc. I have asked the R.S.M. to obtain a Book from H.Q. & will inscribe your name in it and send it on..." also a letter from Capt. Budworth at Piquetberg Road, S. Africa, dated 8-4-1900, addressed to Mr. E. Edwards of B Batt. H.A.C. at Armoury House (with original envelope): "I recd. the pipe and tobacco safely - no present could have been more acceptable. I had brought out with me a reserve stock of pipes but they met with a sad accident..." Budworth lists 20 members of the Battery on active service with him: "All the above are fit and well - please let their friends in the Regt. know..." This letter, & a publisher's handbill advertising Erskine Childers' "In the Ranks of the C.I.V." on one side & his "Riddle of the Sands" on the other are contained in an end-pocket. Rather interesting copy. See illustration on our website.
