Rare scholarly monograph: this copy with ink ownership inscrip. of "F.W. Deakin" i.e. Col. Sir [Frederick] William Deakin, DSO, who as a young Oxford scholar acted as Winston Churchill's literary assistant. He joined SOE in 1941, was parachuted into Montenegro to work with Tito's Yugoslav Partisans & is universally credited with having made a major impact in the region, as described by him in "The Embattled Mountain" & other works. He returned to work with WSC post-WW2 & Martin Gilbert says he was "at the centre of the web of all Churchill's literary efforts." Naturally he features in this work & has made a number of marginal marks including one or two corrections & observations. Orig. blue cloth, gilt, VG, without dw (as issued). See illustration on our website.
