As the Great War progressed large numbers were entering the commissioned ranks to whom the mores & manners of 'An Officer & a Gentleman' would not, it was thought, perhaps come naturally. Works such as this, full of practical advice on correct conduct, although strictly unofficial, enforced a policy of conformity with tradition & class which suited the army. It is more historical than ephemeral. Pilcher commanded 17th (Northern) Div. on the Somme & his son, a regular officer of the Rifle Brigade, was KiA at Neuve Chapelle in 1915. This copy inscribed "To dear Clarena from Father August 2nd 1917" - quite how this lady would benefit from the content is a mystery. Orig. brown printed paper covd. boards with blue cloth backstrip, little rubbed & worn, VG. See illustration on our website.
