ARNEWOOD [Pseud. of COOKE (Col. E.D.M.H. [Montague], DSO, RA)] With the Guns West & East. Illustrated by Lt.-Col. E.A. Hobday, CMG (& two sketches by L. Raven Hill). 1st Ed., 96pp., 26 plates. Privately published in a Limited Edition of 200 Copies. 1923  #62185
[HLMainPic] Cooke went to France with 5th Royal Horse Artillery Brigade in 1914. Subsequently commanded a Battery & gives a very good account of The Battle of Loos, when he acted in support of 15th (Scottish) Div. In 1916 he took a newly raised New Army battery of the 34th Div. to France & fought with them on the Somme until August when selected to form a gunnery school in India. Later served with 60th (London) Div. in Palestine 1917-18 including the capture of Jerusalem. Falls says "This last is particularly interesting as he gives a graphic account of the capture of Jerusalem, into the suburbs of which he must have been about the first man in the British Army to penetrate." Orig. blue paper covd. boards with wheat cloth spine strip, paper label to front board, VG. Number 25 of 200 numbered copies printed, this copy with armorial bookplate of John Stewart (Lt.-Col., DSO, Black Watch, joint author with John Buchan of the 15th [Scottish] Division history) & one tipped-in letter (at Ashley Arnewood Manor, New Milton) to Col. Stewart, regarding his gift of this copy & events at Loos in 1915 when "the battery tried hard to help the Highlanders we so loved & admired" plus a loosely inserted letter with further comment on the 15th Divisional Artillery at Loos, &c., also two offprinted reviews of the book from the TLS & the Royal Artillery Magazine. Interesting copy & rare. See illustrations on our website.   £275
