Rare account of peaceful work on the Western Front. "Mr Stephens was a Quaker, & a leader of American pacifism. Unlike some pacifists, he did highly useful work during the War, in rebuilding houses in the area devastated by the Germans before their retreat to the Hindenburg Line. He appears as an honest, earnest & kindly man, but one with narrow sympathies. The French he does not seem to have comprehended in the least, & his remarks on Roman Catholicism are extraordinarily naive." - Falls. Orig. grey cloth, gilt, some wear to sp., generally VG with pencil ownership inscrip. of Hugh Cecil. See illustration on our website.
