An important & rare record of the British administration of India, reproducing much original correspondence, &c. Wellesley was Governor of Madras, 1797-98; Governor-General of India, 1798-1805, & much involved in the Mahratta Wars (Seringapatam) &c. In 1809, Wellesley was appointed ambassador to Spain, landed at Cadiz just after the Battle of Talavera, & tried unsuccessfully to bring the Spanish government into effective co-operation with his brother (The Duke of Wellington), who, through the failure of his allies, had been forced to retreat into Portugal. Later Lord Lieutenant of Ireland among other senior public offices. Orig. red cloth, gilt, VG, ex-lib. Trinity College, Oxford, with presentation bookplates (gifted in memory of William Hunt) & loosely inserted round TC library labels which were previously affixed to the front boards, leaving traces of their removal.
