Valuable personal account of service in the ranks on the Western Front with the Artist's Rifles (190th Bde., 63rd [RN] Div.), 1917-18, until invalided with trench foot. Falls states: "The account of an attack at Passchendaele & of conditions at Cambrai after the great German counter-attack are very good indeed; in fact, among the best of their kind. But the rest is disfigured by an unreasoned & unpleasant vituperation of superiors & all troops other than those of the front line..." Orig. black cloth, titled in yellow, exceptionally nice bright copy in similar dw, complete with orig. wraparound band bearing an endorsement by R.C. Sherriff ('Journey's End') stating that: "This is the English ALL QUIET, but more outspoken & uncompromising, and carrying greater conviction as a human document... no-one could find it anything but enthralling."
