Personal account of service with the 9th (S) Bn. East Surrey Regiment in France during 1916-17: "This is a compressed account of my experiences as a lance-corporal in the infantry while serving in France during the war. All names and characters introduced are fictitious. They are so introduced in order to express the spirit and outlook of the men who served in the ranks and to reproduce as far as possible the atmosphere of the time by giving typical conversations, comments and points of view. The events chronicled, however, actually happened..." Mainly concerns life in and behind the lines at Givenchy & Bethurne, and on the Vimy Ridge. A neat ink note to the ffep records that the author offered his memoirs for publication to a number of publishers during 1929, including Secker, Heinemann, Heath Cranton & Dent, all of whom declined. However, in 1930 the ms. was submitted to Scholartis Press who went on to publish it in its entirety within their anthology "A Martial Medley: [The War of 1914-1918 in] Fact and Fiction" in the section headed "Actually True." This was quite a feather in the cap of the writer as only ten contributors were selected, including Conal O'Riordan & Charles Edmonds. As a well-written, observant & poignant piece it is perhaps surprising that it was rejected by the other publishers, but on the other hand it is far to short an account for a full-length book, whereas it fitted neatly into Scholartis' anthology. Dup. typescript copy, with num. pencil & pen changes, annotations & corrections by the author. Contemp. brown binder's cloth, gilt title to front, VG. See illustrations on our website.
