Memoir of the services of First Lieutenant John McGavock Grider, an American born in Arkansas in 1892 into a wealthy Southern family (the title "Marse John" is a phonetic representation of the family's black plantation workers' rendering of "Master John"). He joined the American Air Service in 1917 and was posted to England to train with the Royal Flying Corps, joined "Billy" Bishop's 85th Squadron Royal Air Force in France in May 1918 and was reported missing (shot down) on 18th June 1918. His grave is apparently in the region of Armentieres (it is not in the care of the CWGC). Contains an account of his young life and letters to his family (including his children) written during voyage to England, in training & on active service. Grider was the subject of a celebrated work compiled by Elliott White Spings, "Diary of an Unknown Aviator." Recent brown cloth titled in gilt to front & spine, retaining orig. decorated card wrappers, with titles in red and silver to front together with a photo. onlay of the subject. VG thus & scarce.
