Brilliant encapsulation of the life & spirit of the service bn., 11th Sussex (aka First Southdowns or Lowther's Lambs) in which Blunden served, inspired by his attendance at the 1928 reunion. It appeared as No. 1 in a series "Contemporary Essays" edited by Sylvia Norman, whom Blunden was endeavouring to encourage & whom he married in 1933, & is No. 25 of 50 copies, numbered & signed "Edmund Blunden" below the limitation. The essay later appeared in the Criterion Miscellany & in "The Mind's Eye", a collection of Blunden's essays in 1934, but this peculiarly personal 1st Ed. is very rare indeed. Near mint qtr. parchment over striking dec. paper boards, still protected by the orig. & near fine tissue dw., retained in fine quality custom-made drop-side box of fairly recent date, with gilt titled red morocco sp. & small oval to front with "AV" monogram. Superb copy. See illustrations on our website.
