Novel of English stoicism in war, particularly the principal character's simple acceptance of events: he is wounded in the war, his son is killed during an air-raid, his wife succumbs to a bad chill having not got over her son's death and the air- raid having shattered her nerves, his daughter is lost to him forever when she marries an Australian. After all this he returns to humdrum office work as the managing clerk of a solicitor's practise, & on his first afternoon back: "Albert forgot his tea because he was so absorbed in his work. Then when he happened to stretch for a paper he saw it, and although it was quite cold he drank it in case Miss Bimms should be hurt in her feelings. Then he went on with his work." Described by the publisher on the sleeve as "a first novel of tremendous maturity, and insight and power" it was in fact the third or fourth of Cyril Anthony George Bertram's (1897-1978) several published novels (as well as numerous works on art history). Orig. black cloth, titled in green, VG in sl. chipped dw, scarce in any form, especially with dw. See illustrations on our website.
