Inscribed by Jackie Smyth, VC, MC, "To Roger To wish you a very happy New Year and happy memories of 'Old forgotten far off things And battles long ago' from Jackie Smyth." The recipient was Maj.-Gen. Roger Ekin, CIE, who commanded a brigade in Smyth's 17th Division at the battle of the Sittang Bridge in 1942. His Brigade was partially cut off when the Sittang Bridge was blown & he was one of the last to reach safety, by swimming the 600 yard wide river. Some historians consider that had Smyth listened to Ekin's advice the Sittang disaster could have been averted. Smyth won his Cross with the 15th Sikhs in France in 1915.
