[HLMainPic] George King "Rex" Molineux was educated at Winchester and Magdalen College, Oxford. Whilst there he obtained a Special Reserve commission in the South Staffordshire Regiment and in due course a regular 2nd Lieutenancy in the Northumberland Fusiliers in December 1909, shortly afterwards joining the 2nd Battalion. He served in England and India, returning in December 1914. He was a temporary Captain and regimental Transport Officer on proceeding to France in January 1915, later taking command of a company. He served mainly in Flanders and was posted missing during a German attack, subsequently confirmed as shot after surrender, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. Contains a lengthy memoir by his father, which emphasises his dedication to hunting, shooting, fishing, riding point-to-point, cricket, football and golf. His prowess on the sports field ensured his reception in his battalion as he became a very useful member of various regimental teams. The memoir is followed by letters from school and Army to various family members, including some from India and the Western Front. In August 1914 he was appointed an A.D.C. to the Viceroy, but returned to the regiment in October to proceed on active service. His letters are followed by several from officers and men who were captured with him on 8th May 1915 stating that he was shot after surrendering, including Pte. John Curtis: "...he was shot by a group of Germans as me and him came down the St Julien road, about 30 yards out of the trench we had been holding all day. Both of us had our hands above our head. He was hit in the head and left breast..." Full mock vellum, gilt to front & spine, staining to sp. & rear o/w VG & rare, stamps of 5th Bn. Sussex Regt. to ffep.   £265
