Bostock joined the Buffs in India as surgeon in 1842, serving in the Gwalior campaign, afterwards became a popular Surgeon-Major of the Scots Fusilier Guards in the Crimea when he was rewarded with the CB & Legion d'Honneur: "The Crimean portion is especially striking. It would be difficult to point to a more scathing indictment than the letters written before Sebastopol..." - Introductory note.
