HARDIE (Martin, CBE) Dug Outs in Front Line: Hun Trenches on the North Bank of the Piave, Nov. 4 1918. Original watercolour painting, signed by the artist (Martin Hardie 1918), 300x225 mm (with frame: 490x410 mm).  #57967
[HLMainPic] A fine composition with dugouts & elephant iron, discarded kit, &c., in German front line at the Piave, as identified in pencil on the reverse of the frame: a relatively recent not recording what is written on the back of the picture, together with a note that it is stamped: "HQ BEF Italy C.H. Mitchell Lieut Col Intelligence." (perhaps he bought it from the artist.) Hardie was ed. at St. Paul's School, Trinity College Cambridge & The Royal College of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy & elsewhere, worked at the V&A & was an Assistant Keeper by 1914, when he joined the Army. He worked as a Deputy Head Censor in France & Italy, finding time also to paint. After the war he returned to the V&A becoming keeper of the Dept. of Engraving, Illustration & Design. He was also a member of the Council of the Royal College of Art. Presented framed & glazed: good quality gilt frame with ruled mount. VG. See illustrations on our website.   £450
