These photographs, showing largely unspoilt landscape, but with a little evidence of bombing or shelling, were presumably taken in preparation for the recapture. See illustration on our website.

Showing road, railway & foot bndges in the region of Brunemont & Aubigny, Paillencourt & Estrun, with their map references & notes on their construction in the negative. The surrounding countryside shows some shelling & a few trench lines, but at the time the canal was crossed the BEF had advanced rapidly beyond Amiens into open country. In fact, this region was not contested until October 1918 when the 2nd & 3rd Canadian Brigades of the 1st Canadian Division "found two well-wired trenches on their front only lightly held by the enemy" (OH 1918 Part V, pp.260-261 refers). The front lines were taken but: "The ground nearby, falling gently to the canal, gave no cover, and the eastern bank was strongly held... the candians rushed down to the canal, where a 7-foot bank gave proection... The bridges on the whole front having been destroyed, no attempt to cross the canal was made." Together with contemp. fldg. map sheet showing the locations. See illustrations on our website.

Taken from the road north of Neuve Chapelle (Avington Park was probably the name of a house on the road used as an OP) looking south-east towards the German Line between Aubers & Neuve Chapelle. The British breastwork front line very clearly delineated in the foreground (a trench sign can be made out, bearing the map square of the location: M24) the German breastworks also clearly visible beyond with a blockhouse (at map ref. M.30.b.8.05) identified in the image. Superb view of the battlefield exactly as the artillery FOO's using the OP would have viewed it. Rolled, VG.
