Ranken was commissioned from Woolwich in 1847. He led the forlorn hope attack on the Redan on 8th Sept. 1855 & was killed on 28th Feb. 1856 whilst engaged in blowing up the White Barracks in Sebastopol - the last British officer to die in the Crimea. Interesting letters & diaries edited by his brother. Orig. red blindstamped cloth, gilt to sp., a little chipped & rubbed at extremities but generally VG & rare, inscribed "Somerville Hogg from the Editor April 1858." See illustration on our website.
