Note: from humble beginnings as the son of a plumber, Brown became a clerk at the PO Savings Bank & rose through various departments to become General Sec. of the Civil Service Clerical Association from 1919-1942, Labour MP for West Wolverhampton, 1929-31 & Independent MP for Rugby, 1942-50. To the surprise of his friends he left a substantial fortune on his death in 1960, mainly amassed through frugal living. (Vide obit. cuttings loosely inserted in this book.)
