A wounded officer trapped in No-Man's-Land reflects on his pre-war life & recalls his wartime experiences. At night he attempts to crawl in to the lines, only to be despatched by a nervous sentry. (The author joined a UPS bn. in 1914, was commissioned in the Dorset Regt. & went to the front early in 1915, became a company commander & was invalided in 1916, afterwards joining the staff of the "Daily Mirror.") Bartlett was joint author - with R.C. Sherriff - of the novelised version of 'Journey's End.' Falls states: "Mr Bartlett's account of warfare in the Ypres Salient, clear & well-constructed as it is, is no more than an introduction to his novel... It is as a piece of literary mechanism rather clumsy, but the episodes which flash through the doomed man's mind are excellently described.
