The C-in-C's self-serving & warped recollections of the 1914 campaign (in fact ghost written by the 'Times' journalist Lovat Fraser). Falls thought French "his own worst enemy" in "His lack of generosity to a fine soldier" (Smith-Dorrien) adding: "his ignorance, even when he was in a position to obtain accurate knowledge, regarding what had actually happened were most uncomfortable to the reader." The book is derided by modern historians (Keith Simpson, in The First World War & Military History, termed it "an inaccurate & biased account of his period in command in 1914-15, to which Haig took exception" while Richard Holmes, in the same work refers to his "outspoken attack on Kitchener."). Orig. blue cloth, gilt, VG dw (some abrasion to sp. panel) & scarce thus, & despite its shortcomings an important work re the historiography of the 1914-15 campaign, French's treatment of Smith-Dorrien, &c.
